We are thrilled to spotlight Marianna Langston, Nutrition Educator for Morehouse and Union Parishes, as our SECOND Nutrition Educator of the Month! Marianna’s innovative programs and unwavering dedication have made a significant impact on her community, promoting nutrition, wellness, and healthy habits in creative and engaging ways.
Marianna’s collaboration with Morehouse 4-H has brought invaluable workshops to local schools, featuring nutrition, wellness, and food preparation skills. Through hands-on programs, students gain practical knowledge during their regular school day and after-school programs, including the 21st Century Community Learning Center initiatives.
Her gardening programs have provided schools, community centers, and housing complexes with tools and knowledge to grow their own vegetables, fruits, and herbs. These initiatives empower individuals and families to take charge of their nutrition while fostering a deeper connection to the food they eat.
Marianna’s innovative efforts extend to her work with the Council on Aging, local agency sites, and housing complexes. She helps participants utilize items from their commodity and food pantry boxes, often providing live recipe demonstrations and taste tests. These efforts have led to participants feeling more confident in preparing unfamiliar foods and using more of the items they receive each month.
One of Marianna’s notable accomplishments was organizing the SU AgCenter Spring Health Fair in Morehouse Parish. The event drew over 200 attendees who benefited from health screenings, physical activities, and access to community resources.
This past summer, Marianna led a total of four CHEF Camps across Morehouse and Union Parishes. These camps have grown in popularity each year, with the Union Parish camp expanding from a one-week event to two full weeks thanks to support from local businesses. The Morehouse Parish camps, conducted in partnership with Morehouse Parish 4-H and the Robinson Williams Community Center in Bastrop, also saw increased participation.
One camper’s enthusiastic remark, “BEST CAMP EVER,” followed by the question, “Do you have the date for next summer yet?” perfectly sums up the impact of Marianna’s work. Through these camps, students are not only learning about healthy eating but also fostering creativity and forming lasting memories in a supportive environment.
Congratulations, Marianna, and thank you for your exceptional contributions to improving the lives of those in Morehouse and Union Parishes. Your passion and dedication inspire us all!
